This population based case-control study consisted of 2961 individuals with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder, including 445 with intellectual disability comorbidity.
Researchers found an association between exposure to pesticides during pregnancy and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). 11 high-use pesticides were studied and the worst offenders were glyphosate, chlorpyrifos, diazinon, malathion, avermectin and permethrin.
They also found that exposure in the first year of life increased the odds of ASD with comorbid intellectual disability.
